IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Petra Macneary
Canon: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Canon Point: Crimson Flower route, following Chapter 14.
Age: 22
Background: Petra @ the Fire Emblem Wiki

Arrival Scenario: Free Cities

Suitability: Petra comes from a canon that revolves around war between multiple factions with plenty of political intrigue, meaning that many facets of this setting will be familiar to her and engaging with them will be very natural. As someone who only wishes to fight for a cause she believes in, she will be hesitant to join a faction, but she is as curious as she is determined and will be quick to find her footing and occupy herself. Learning more about this world’s cultures and belief systems will be high on her list, and she would be eager to use her exploration and survival skills to participate in activities such as delving into ruins or mapping the Nether.

Joining a faction is not out of the question, but she will take some time in weighing where she would like to lend her support and her swordarm, as both this world and its struggles are unfamiliar to her. Fortunately, she is not the type to let things remain unfamiliar for long, nor does she likes to sit idle. She prefers to keep busy, to make herself useful; she comes from a culture where all people are expected to contribute in whatever way they can to support their kingdom, and she has always done her best to live accordingly.

Powers: None. Petra is a skilled combatant, with extensive experience in both swordplay and archery as well as hunting and tracking, but none of her abilities are supernatural. Instead, she possesses practical skills that she has put a great deal of time and effort into honing.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them. Coming to the Adrestian Empire as a “foreign exchange student” is easily one of the most impactful moments in Petra’s young life. She had lost her father at the age of eleven during a war where her own kingdom, Brigid, had joined forces with another, Dagda, and attempted to invade the Empire itself, only to fail. The loss of her father made her the next in line for the Brigid throne, and Brigid became a vassal state. While little of Brigid is seen firsthand in canon, we do know that the Empire has put rather rigid restrictions on its people and has a stranglehold on the kingdom’s trade, and in addition, Petra’s coming to live in the Empire itself is more about holding the kingdom politically hostage rather than cultural exchange, with the Empire’s leadership believing that her presence will keep her grandfather, the reigning king of Brigid, from doing anything unwise.

This relocation has deeply impacted Petra in a number of ways. Taken from her home, she spent no small amount of time feeling out of place and struggling with culture shock, though her optimism and enthusiasm helped her to make the most of it. She had to dedicate a large portion of her time to learning a new language, which she still struggles with even now, and found herself living among people who she had been raised to see as her enemies. Despite this, Petra managed make friends and carve out a place for herself— while at the Officer’s Academy, she developed deep bonds with classmates and other students, including the heir to the Adrestian Empire herself, Edelgard von Hresvelg.

Though the Empire had once been Brigid’s enemy, friendship and an understanding and appreciation for Edelgard’s ideals were enough for Petra to follow her to war when the time came— of her own free will, and not out of obligation. This put her in a position she never would have been in if she had never left home, and has also forced her to address how her feelings and newfound loyalties reflect on her loyalties and duties to her own kingdom, which is a challenge in its own right.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by? Petra allows herself to be lead by her heart. She will not fight for or otherwise support a cause she does not believe in, and believing in any particular cause requires her to feel certain that it is well-intentioned and will achieve change for the better. She consistently strives to do what she feels is right; Fire Emblem allows many in-story opportunities to recruit characters from different factions, and when recruited, Petra is always vocal about which values and goals she agrees with and supports. Keeping all of this in mind, she is still a warrior at heart and understands that sometimes violence is a necessity. She believes there are times to capture and times to kill, and that the best way is not always necessarily kind, even if it makes her heart heavy— that is the nature of war, and when at war, one does what one must to fight for their beliefs. One can still behave honorably in such situations, and she strives to conduct herself with honor at all times.

What quality or qualities do they admire most? Petra greatly values strength in all its forms. Physical strength, of course, leaves quite an impression on her, but she also admires strength of spirit. She and her people have faced great hardship, as have many of her friends in the Empire, and she openly admires and commends them on their resilience in her efforts to boost morale. Strength, in her opinion, is not always winning, but often being able to fail and then pick oneself up again afterwards and continue onward, which takes great strength of will.

She also values loyalty, though she herself has a complicated relationship with it at times, as explained below. She has come to consider friendship something precious and to be cherished, and is incredibly protective of and loyal to those she holds dear. Naturally, she appreciates when the same is shown to her in turn. She is not one to easily break a vow, and is a stalwart ally to any who are fortunate enough to have her on their side.

Petra has an incredible admiration for anyone who demonstrates resourcefulness, as well. She comes from a kingdom where every person is able to fight, hunt, or otherwise provide for themselves and their people, regardless of their station. Even as princess of Brigid, Petra is skilled with hunting, fishing, gathering and other important survival skills. She is able to make due with very little if need be, and while her own brand of resourcefulness largely applies to spending time in the wild, she recognizes that there are other sorts that are just as valuable. Anyone who is especially clever and able to make their own way is bound to impress her; she admires self-sufficiency in all its forms.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike? While Petra is largely a confident and optimistic soul, living in the Empire for several years has presented her with something of a moral dilemma. Her complicated relationship with loyalty, mentioned above, comes into play here. She often worries if having formed bonds and actually enjoying parts of her life in Adrestia is being disloyal to her own people, given that her presence in the Empire is under very delicate pretenses. She has been in the Empire well over five years now, and often finds herself feeling conflicted; while Brigid and the Adrestian Empire are technically allies, the situation is strained and she often worries what her people back home may think of her, or if being away from them too long will somehow make her less fit to lead when the time comes.

While this is not quite the same as disliking some inherent quality about herself, it still weighs on her quite heavily and is of great concern. She questions whether or not she is challenging her own moral code by fighting for the Empire that was responsible for her own father’s death, and struggles with whether fighting alongside her current allies is dishonoring his memory and efforts. It is not often that she doubts herself, but this complex matter often forces her to feel conflicted, and so she focuses on what good her efforts with the Empire will do for Brigid in the future.

What is their sign, and why? Strength. Petra defines herself by both her physical strength and strength of will. She frequently acts as a protector, being very passionate about ensuring the safety and wellbeing of her friends and allies, often putting herself in the path of danger to achieve this end. She has endured a great deal living as a vassal of the Adrestian Empire, and is considered bright and incredibly resilient by those around her.
